Cold Binary Atomic Collisions in a Light Field

چکیده
The rate coefficients are calculated for trap loss due to excited state formation during s-wave collisions of two atoms in a light field in a cold atomic gas near conditions for formation of a Bose-Einstein condensate. Blue detuning from the allowed atomic resonance transition causes excitation of a replusive molecular potential, whereas red detuning causes excitation when the light is tuned near a bound vibrational energy level of an attractive molecular potential. In either case, when the light intensity is low and the detuning is large compared to the natural linewidth of the atomic transition, the rate coefficient for the collisional loss rate is proportional to a molecular Franck-Condon factor. A simple reflection approximation formula is derived which permits the rate coefficient to be given analytically in either case. The Franck-Condon factor is equal to |Ψg(RC)2|/DC, where Ψg(RC) is the ground state scattering wavefunction at the Condon point RC, where the quasimolecule is in resonance with the exciting light, and DC is the slope difference between ground and excited potentials at RC. The analytic reflection approximation formula, as well as a simple phase-amplitude formula for the intermediate range wavefunction, give excellent agreement with the results of numerical quantum mechanical calculations. The trap loss rates due to binary collisions are comparable to or exceed those due to atomic recoil heating for a wide range of detunings to the blue of atomic resonance and near the peaks of photoassociation resonances for the case of red detuning.

Theories for cold atomic collisions in light fields
I describe the current theories for cold collisions between laser-cooled and trapped neutral atoms in light fields. The emphasis is on the dynamical nature of the problem, i.e. on the collisional loss of atoms from the trap or collisional heating of the atomic cloud. The recent work on optical shielding of collisions is also reviewed.

We examine cold atomic collisions within a resonant optical cavity. The quantized cavity mode can be used to manipulate the collisions between the cold atoms, such that periodic exchange of excitations between the atoms and the electromagnetic field strongly alters the collision dynamics. A colliding pair of atoms can thereby oscillate between its ground and excited states during the collision ...

We propose a physical mechanism for tuning the atomatom interaction strength at ultra-low temperatures. In the presence of a dc electric field the interatomic potential is changed due to the effective dipole-dipole interaction between the polarized atoms. Detailed multi-channel scattering calculations reveal features never before discussed for ultra-cold atomic collisions. We demonstrate that o...
متن کاملCold collisions in strong laser fields: partial wave analysis of magnesium collisions
We have developed Monte Carlo wave function simulation schemes to study cold collisions between magnesium atoms in a strong red-detuned laser field. In order to address the strong-field problem, we extend the Monte Carlo wave function framework to include the partial wave structure of the threedimensional system. The average heating rate due to radiative collisions is calculated with two differ...

In the study of individual collision events laser light can be used to influence or probe the process prior to, during, or after the binary particle interaction. We discuss some problems and particularly challenging possibilities for modifying the collision process in a high, but not too high, laser field. We discuss the possibilities of state selective preparation of quasimolecular I and II st...
